WELCOME from Dr. Jeff Hauswald
Superintendent of Kokomo School Corporation

Greetings from Kokomo Schools! During the recent course of events, I cannot imagine a time when so many people have faced, together, such a challenging set of circumstances related to one global health crisis.

On March 16, 2020, Kokomo School Corporation immediately felt the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic when all school buildings were closed and we adopted “e-Learning”; athletic and other after-school events and activities were canceled; the manner in which work was completed by staff members was altered; and end-of-year traditions, including our annual Kokomo High School commencement, were forced to adapt to new realities as virtual recognitions and ceremonies were necessary.

As government restrictions are eased, and new permissions allow a return of some face-to-face activities and instruction, Kokomo School Corporation has worked diligently as a team, in consultation with local and State health officials, while listening to our students and families, to create a safe and effective educational plan for the 2020-2021 school year.

Adaptive teaching, independent learning, increased technological dependencies, and community-wide efforts to support our students in their academic, physical, and social-emotional health will continue to help our students reach their full potential during these often-trying times. In the end, I am confident our students will succeed because they will use their determination, confidence, and grit to reach their individual goals. Our staff is here to support students in this quest. Together, we are here to celebrate their accomplishments.

Your school leaders – including Board members, administrators, and teachers – continue to recognize the need to provide a range of programs and options for our students and parents. These leaders have spent many hours studying some of the top programs and schools in the world. In recent years, the seeds planted during that research have resulted in International Baccalaureate (IB) World schools, Integrated Arts schools, State-certified STEM schools, Technology Academies, early childhood expansion with preschool programs at 6 of our 7 elementary schools, and Career schools.

Kokomo Schools is pleased to offer an additional choice for the 2020-2021 school year: a K-12 Virtual Learning option. Families may choose from the virtual STEM, Integrated Arts, and International Baccalaureate programs at the elementary and middle school levels. The virtual program at Kokomo High School features options for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, as well as traditional graduation pathways. Kokomo Schools officials also have created a Virtual College Preparatory Academy through Kokomo High School, which allows high school students to complete Advanced Placement courses through the new virtual format.

I am proud of the work by our teachers and staff as our school corporation continues to move forward. I continue to feel blessed to serve as Superintendent of the Kokomo School Corporation, and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to live and work in this amazing community of Kokomo! Thank you for your continued support of Kokomo Schools. Go Kats!
