SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKERS
WHAT WE DO
School social workers are mental health professionals licensed to provide services that promote social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment in school and in society. School social workers use research-based approaches that prevent problem behavior and create a safe and support school climate. By working closely with teachers, parents, and administrators, school social workers provide confidential inpidual and group services to students. Students exhibiting symptoms of stress, low self-esteem, aggressive behavior, anger problems, sadness, hopelessness, or who are experiencing stressful situations such as death, porce, or abuse / neglect with the family environment are often referred for social work services when these issues interfere with the learning process. Students who have alcohol or substance abuse problems are also referred to the school social worker. School social workers engage families as partners in the students' education and access community resources as needed.
ATTENDANCE OFFICERS
WHAT WE DO
Attendance officers monitor student absenteeism. This monitoring to improve student attendance is conducted through letters, home visits, parent conferences, and in the most serious cases, a referral for educational neglect. This early intervention in absenteeism reduces dropout rates.
